Helical piles are a great alternative to the typical concrete sonotube foundations often used for home additions, delivering firmer support in a fraction of the time
Originally invented in the 1830's, helical piles are a great alternative to poured or driven pile foundations and have been used across the United States (and the world) for nearly 200 years.
Their speed, strength, and performance, has made them a favorite solution for home additions by both homeowners and engineers.
Speed & Efficiency
The fantastic speed at which we can install helical piles allows us to complete most remediation projects within a single day
Tight Access
Helical piles can be installed within inches of existing structures, making it safe and easy to restore your failing foundation
No Vibrations
No vibrations or ground disturbance is created by a helical pile installation, protecting your home from further damage

"I chose CDP Excavating Services based on its ratings and am happy to provide my own review now. Jason, Greg, and the CDP crew performed well above my expectations. The price for the work was very reasonable, and they did a lot of hard work!"

What are helical piles, and how do they work?
Helical piles are a type of deep foundation that consists of a steel shaft with one or more 'helix plates' (blades) attached towards the bottom.
They're "screwed" deep into the earth until we reach strong layers of load-bearing soil. This unique design creates minimal soil disruption and offers immediate load-bearing capacity (meaning you can start building right after installation).
Why choose a helical pile foundation for my home addition?
Helical pile foundations offer a range of benefits for your home addition project, whether you're a DIY'er or professional contractor.
They're quick and easy to install, create significantly less disturbance to the site compared to concrete, and offer extremely long-lasting support.
This solution is particularly useful in areas with weak soils, limited access, or where the noise and disruption of a typical concrete installation is undesirable. Plus, they can be loaded immediately after installation which greatly speeds-up the construction process.
Is it true that helical foundations are more eco-friendly?
Compared to concrete, yes!
Their installation causes minimal disturbance to the soil and surrounding landscape, as we don't need to perform excavation. They also offer the same, and more, support than concrete does but while using a fraction of the raw material (which also reduces embodied carbon).
A helical pile can also be 100% recycled in the future, as they're made entirely from steel.
While they do still have some environmental impact, compared to concrete its a far friendlier foundation solution.
What kinds of soil can a helical pile be installed into?
Helical pile foundations are extremely versatile and can adapt to a wide range of soil types - including clay, silt, sand, and even gravel.
They're especially useful in soil conditions where traditional footing and slab foundations could run into problems - like expansive clays or loose sands.
That said, we always recommend securing a professional geotechnical evaluation to determine the specific type of helical pile required for your soil conditions. If you need help with this, we can connect you to our trusted engineering partners!
How much will a helical pile foundation cost for my home addition?
The exact cost of your helical pile foundation will vary depending on factors like the depth, design, and number of piles required, which is influenced by your specific project and soil conditions.
Generally speaking, however, when compared to traditional concrete foundations helical piles tend to be more cost-effective overall thanks to their quick installation and reduced site preparation.
