Signs of a damaged seawall
Although seawall damage is often hidden from view, you can look for signs of damage using the tips below.
1. Obvious signs of damage
Check for obvious damage near or on the wall, such as cracks in the concrete, voids near the edge of the wall, erosion, rust, or sinkholes. Also inspect the wall itself for bowing or leaning. These are instances where a repair is necessary, otherwise it could lead to total seawall failure.
2. Signs of erosion and sink holes
Check for signs of erosion by looking for buildup of sand or earth in the water. You can also check for less obvious sinkholes and erosion by probing the ground near the wall. If the probe slides easily into the earth, there is likely a crack in the seawall allowing water to work its way in, and consequently pull earth back out into the water.
3. Structural damage up to 100 ft. from the seawall
Seawall damage can effect structures – such as buildings, concrete/block patios, and other walls – as far as 100 feet from the seawall itself. Underground water seepage will continue to travel inland until the repair is addressed. This can cause erosion, patio damage, structural sinking, and more. Even if the breakwall appears in good condition, there may be cracks or damage that are not obvious.
